Descriptive Study of Professional Veterinary Visits in Pig Farming: Types, Frequencies, and Health Management Issues

This investigation was conducted to analyze the nature and frequency of visits made by Animal Health Professionals from the Dutch veterinary service sector to growing and fattening pig farms. The study med at identifying herd-health management aspects that did not align with established standards through two primary visit types - problem-solving visits and screening visits.

A total sample size of 373 visit reports was thoroughly examined for this research project, which were divided as follows:

1 Problem-Solving Visits n = 306: These visits primarily addressed health concerns, welfare issues, and performance challenges on the farm. The mn reason cited for requesting a professional veterinarian's assessment of farm conditions and management practices was respiratory disorders, accounting for n = 156 out of these visits.

2 Screening Visits n = 67: This category focused on assessing herd-health management factors that did not meet established standards med at disease prevention. The primary issues identified included:

- Abrupt changes in feeding regimes such as feed type, composition or supplier alterations 37

- Insufficient measures to prevent pathogens from entering the farm through people and vehicles 83

- Incorrect adjustment of the ventilation system leading to potential health risks 58-60

The focus on housing-climate management revealed that these factors were equally identified irrespective of whether the visit was classified as a problem-solving or screening type, indicating that even farms seemingly free from health concerns might still harbor disease-related issues. This implies that environmental and managerial factors significantly influence pig health and performance.

This research highlights that while veterinarians and other farm advisors assist farmers in optimizing herd health management practices, there is an opportunity for further support when environmental conditions and management strategies play a critical role. The knowledge base of these advisors could be expanded through educational materials such as textbooks, courses, or digital platforms focused on integrated herd-health management.
