Feeding Your Gilts: Expert Recommations for Robust Pigs at Mating
The foundation of a thriving pig herd rests heavily on effective feeding practices for gilts. Without proper nutrition, growth potential and reproductive health can suffer significantly. Recently, SEGES Innovation introduced new guidelines for gilt feeding based on rigorous trials using DanBred pigs.
To ensure your farm's success through the breeding process, it's crucial to understand how to properly feed your gilts. Here are five key recommations that will help you achieve optimal results:
The recommed phases are:
30-85 kg
85-110 kg
Over 110 kg
Timing and Weight at Mating: Gilts should be ready for mating around the age of 210-230 days 30-33 weeks and weigh between 150-165 kg. The m is to achieve a dly growth rate of 900 g from 30-140 kg, which will establish strong reproductive health for years.
Monitoring Back Fat Thickness: To ensure longevity and high reproduction rates, it's vital to control back fat thickness throughout gestation. Regular monitoring through weight checks and back fat measurements can help mntn an optimal target range of 13-15 mm at mating time.
Balanced Lysine and Protein Levels: A balanced diet with proper lysine and protein content minimizes issues like tl biting, which are often associated with excessive nutrition. The initial feed strategy helps prevent behavioral problems by providing sufficient but not over-abundant levels of these nutrients until 85 kg.
The focus then shifts to lower levels of protein and lysine in later phases to ensure the desired weight gn and fat layer development for breeding readiness.
Implementing these recommations will not only optimize gilt performance but also support your farm's overall success by improving reproductive outcomes and mntning herd health.
Happy farming!
