The Influence of Artificial Insemination Technique and Semen Preparation on the Financial Viability in a Swine Crossbreeding System

Artificial inseminationtechniques, including intrauterine IUI, deep intrauterine DUI, and conventionalmethods, along with semen preparation through fresh or frozen storage, impact swine breeding efficiency, genetic dissemination, and biosecurity. The study explores the financial impacts of these factors on a pig crossbreeding system using ZPLAN software.

A 3-tiered system was simulated in ZPLAN to analyze the scenario where nucleus lines B and A generate 200,000 BA sows at the multiplier level. Line C boars were used forpurposes with semen from line B or A sows after crossbreeding. The financial indicators of interest included net profit based on farrowing rates ranging from 60 to 90 and litter sizes ranging from 8 to 14 live pigs.

The study med at estimating genetic improvement in key trts: number born alive, adjusted weaning weight, days to reach a specific body weight 113.5 kg, backfat thickness, and average dly gn over the course of one year.

Key findings included:

The findings suggest that the choice oftechnique along with optimal semen preparation can significantly impact both reproductive outcomes and financial returns in a swine crossbreeding system. Implementing IUI with fresh semen could be financially advantageous, providing better performance metrics while potentially reducing costs associated with traditional DUI methods involving frozen semen.

In , this study highlights the importance of considering varioustechniques alongside semen preparation strategies to optimize financial viability in pig farming operations. Optimal use of technology can lead to substantial improvements in both productivity and profitability within a swine breeding enterprise.
