PREGNANT SOW HOUSING
UNDER REVIEW
COMMENT ON THIS POLICY
The management and housing of pregnant sows are subject to various configurations. When formulating plans for sow housing and care, consider the following guidelines:
Ensure each animal has access to nutritious food and clean water;
Optimize r quality and mntn adequate sanitation;
Protect sows from exposure to extreme environmental conditions;
Minimize risk of injuries, pn, distress, fear, or disease;
Enable monitoring of individual sows to assess their welfare status;
Offer sufficient space for sows to adopt natural postures and engage in normal behaviors.
Various housing systems have advantages and disadvantages. While gestation stalls limit aggression, minimize injury, reduce competition, and allow personalized feeding management, they might hinder the natural expression of behavior due to restricted movement. Conversely, group housing promotes more freedom but may result in increased lameness or undesirable social behaviors like aggression or competition for resources.
The AVMA supports continuous research into understanding and meeting the welfare needs of pregnant sows effectively. Proper trning for individuals responsible for handling and working with pregnant sows is critical to ensure they are capable of providing and promoting good welfare within their chosen management system.
