PATHSURVPIG Project: Investigating Respiratory Disease in Irish Pig Farms
The PATHSURVPIG project focuses on the systematic examination of respiratory diseases in Ireland, with an m to identify risk factors related to management practices, nutrition, genetics and other parameters that contribute to disease outbreaks. This comprehensive study will incorporate baseline data collected from approximately 80-100 farms through cross-sectional analysis and longitudinal studies conducted on up to 20 farms for exted periods.
By adopting a holistic approach, the project seeks to correlate respiratory issues with various aspects such as disease risk factors, farm management efficiency, animal welfare standards, and antimicrobial usage. This multifaceted assessment will enable us to conduct an in-depth economic analysis that considers both disease-related costs and benefits, thereby maximizing our understanding of why diseases occur on farms.
Expected Outcomes:
Identification of key respiratory pathogens causing significant health issues for the Irish pig industry along with their effects on growing-finishing efficiency.
Assessment of the prevalence and causes of pleurisy and bronchopneumonia in slaughter pigs, including the impact these conditions have on carcass quality and farm profitability.
Development of cost-effective diagnostic tools to manage respiratory diseases more efficiently within Irish pig farms.
Conducting a comprehensive economic evaluation of disease impacts, welfare concerns, and current treatment strategies on Irish pig production.
Publication Dissemination:
Publications will include research findings on the most significant respiratory disorders affecting the industry along with their impact on animal health, productivity, and financial gns for the farmers.
Dissemination materials such as posters, presentations, and workshops will be utilized to share these insights with relevant stakeholders including researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
