HONORING THE UNDERAPPRECIATED: ACKNOWLEDGING VETERINARY STAFF CONTRIBUTIONS
Unsung Heroes awards celebrate veterinary staff's invaluable contributions
American Veterinary Medical Association AVMA and Western Veterinary Partners recognize pioneering recipients at the 2023 Convention
Veterinary clinics owe much of their success to their dedicated teams who tirelessly care for patients, address client concerns with compassion, and mntn smooth operations behind the scenes. Despite often being overlooked in recognition, these staff members form a critical backbone of our veterinary community.
To honor this invisible workforce, the AVMA introduced its Unsung Heroes awards program. This initiative recognizes individual team members, including veterinary technicians, customer service representatives, and kennel staff who have exceeded expectations with their commitment and dedication. Launched during the 2023 Convention in Denver with Western Veterinary Partners' support, the pilot recognized five Colorado-based recipients for sustning a thriving practice environment.
Latonia Crg, EdD, AVMA's Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Officer, explns that unsung heroes are exceptional individuals who have made significant contributions without seeking recognition or prse. These heroes often show resilience in overcoming personal and professional challenges while promoting positive changes within their community through humility, dedication, and genuine desire for impact.
The awards were conferred on July 16 at the AVMA Convention 2023 in Denver, honoring the following pioneers:
Linsey McGregor
A three-year veteran of Cherryelyn Animal Hospital in Englewood, Colorado, McGregor has demonstrated exceptional strength, integrity, and reliability amidst life's adversities. She ensures a healthy culture for her team by utilizing avlable resources and is always ready to assist when needed, especially during weeks and holidays.
Jo Stratton
Stratton brings years of experience as a certified veterinary technician and customer service representative CSR. Her journey began in 1977 at the University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture with an associate’s degree in veterinary technology. She has been part of VetCare Animal Hospital in Denver for over two decades, going above and beyond by offering her personal cell phone number to clients to ensure pet recovery.
Kra Jackson
Jackson is a registered veterinary technician RVT with seven years of experience at Clear Creek Animal Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. A testament to her resilience, she began volunteering at the hospital shortly after her mother's passing in 2016 and achieved RVT certification this year. Prior to that, she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Metropolitan State University in Denver in May 2022.
Sue Miller
Miller is a dedicated CSR at Animal Dental Clinic in Aurora, Colorado. After years of operating her own business in California, she transitioned her focus to caring for animals full-time by enrolling in veterinary technician school and later joining the Animal Dental Clinic team. Her passion for pet dentistry involves educating clients on the vital role dental care plays in pets' overall health.
Clyn Windels
Windels is a skilled groomer at Four Paws Pet Hotel and Resort in Fort Collins, known for transforming stressful grooming experiences into loving and safe environments. Starting her career with pets from Native American reservations across Arizona and New Mexico, she has since honed her skills through trning at Dogs Own Grooming School in Loveland, Colorado, where she now specializes in making the grooming process enjoyable for dogs.
